The Origin Story of Sixx

From Sixx - I am often asked "why am I always sitting when we perform?", well it's not because I am lazy, although I am, but it is not the reason. The reason, as my wife Rachel likes to say "you're broken".

When I was in my mid 20's I was the victim of a hit and run. I was run over by a car, and actually declared dead at the scene and had my body covered. Fortunately, while being put in "the wagon" vital signs were found. I had both my legs and ankles broken, my pelvis crushed, a busted sternum, and my right clavicle was virtually turn to dust from being crushed. As a doctor told me later, "my right side is held together only by tissue, not bone.

I was told I would never walk properly again, but with sheer determination and a ton of physical therapy I was able to get off a walker and start doing the "6-Pack Shuffle", as my friends called it, (at the time my nickname was "SixPack").

Knocking on La Salina Cantina Door

THANKS LA SALINA CANTINA. It was a really fun jam last night. I t was our first time there and we like places with a chill feel.

A good crowd and it very cool to have our friends Lou Pando all the way from Punta Banda play a set on drums, and Arthur Cardenas all the way from Tijuana sit in for all 3 sets on lead guitar, including singing "Knocking on Heavens Door" to close out the night - never played that tune before, it was a lot of fun. I do wish it was a bit warmer outside, looks like there is a really cool patio and stage outside. Maybe in the future we can do a show there during the summer.

Always great to see our friends come out to new venues. Oh yah, and we will doing WILD PACK WEDNESDAYS

Thank You All!

Last night at Bobby's by the Sea was a lot of fun. I had one guy tell me my voice sounded like Jimi Hendrix when he bought our CD. I'm waiting for the day they tell me my guitar playing is like Jimi, not my voice, but hey I'll take either. Especially since he also bought 2 of our Wild Pack t-shirts to go with his new CD

New Year's Eve in Puerto Penasco!

New Year's Eve in Puerto Penasco was a fabulous event. We had a great time performing to a full house. Thanks to everyone that joined us for the end of the year bash.

Thanks to Jason Bushong for driving ll the way from San Diego to jam us, and of course to Jill for keep bringing us back. We love Penasco and we'll keep coming back as much as we can. Happy New Year!

Laying Down Some Sax and Tequila

When Louis Armstrong blew his brass on his version of St. James Infirmary, we knew we wanted some killer brass on our version, so we enlisted our good friend Phillip Singletary and his tenor saxophone. We had saved the last two tracks on our forthcoming album MALOS HUESOS for Phillip.

Phillip asked if we had a little something to loosen up, and wet his whistle. We didn't so I ran over to Oxxo and got a fifth of Jose Cuervo Especial. Needless to say, the whistle got wet and we laid down some killer sax tracks and a bottle of tequila. I think St. James Infirmary almost put Phillip into the San Felipe infirmary, or at least his wife Nikki almost did when he got home.

Great Crowd and Fun Group

Rachel took a couple of pictures of Oscar and I getting ready for the show at La Marina on Saturday night...IT WAS A BLAST!! We rocked the place, or bluesed it in this case...either way loads of fun and good people. We had one of the best compliments EVER...an older couple from the area that pretty much danced the entire night, then came to us after and said we were the best thing they'd seen in 18 years (apparently that is how long they lived in the area). They were a hoot! Even their names were fun, his name was Mike and her name was Mike, not making this up. He kept telling me about a television commercial with motorcycles and music that said Ah ha ha ha...very blues, sounded like something John Lee Hooker would do, don't know what it was but it was funny talking to him about it. Anyways, another fun night.

Love My Mama Bears!

Mama Bears was great. We just love this place, the customers are very nice, and always incredible tippers...truly amazing, more than any other place we have ever played. Plus the owners Tina and Joanie are way cool and the staff are too. Next week is their last week and the new owners will be taking over...and they too seem very cool. I know one of them Cort is already cooking all the pizza and he is really a nice guy, very laid back bunch. When we were done, Tina got so excited she even picked up Rachel wink emoticon Our good friend Phillip Singletary joined us on his sax, plus other San Felipe friends Marilyn, JC and NickiNomi and local friends too. Oh and of course, the food is amazing...we even have our own pizza, now called the "veggie cracker", veggie pizza with red sauce, and no cheese and added garlic. Ate two of them last night yum!

Malos Huesos (Bad Bones) CD

We are really excited, tomorrow - Sept. 2, 2015 we will start recording our first CD entitled "Malos Huesos" (Bad Bones)" (Here at Seven),

Our current drummer Oscar QuiƱones will be recording with us. We are planning for the CD to have 11-12 songs. We'll see how it goes, we will be recording every day this week. All originals and one blues/jazz song from 1923 called Saint James Infirmary.

Strung Junk Crossroad Guitar

I (Sixx) had the privilege of playing a original one of a kind "Crossroad" guitar. Our friend Steve Kinney, the guitar maker from Strung Junk drove all the way to Punta Banda from Rosarito Beach on Friday to watch us perform at La Marina and was cool enough to bring his original "Crossroads" guitar, with the Highway 61 and 49 signs on either side. Very cool sounding guitar with a single, single coil vintage Harmony pickup. Played it an entire set and really enjoyed the feel. - SEE MORE PHOTOS -

BLUES HISTORY - Crossroads being the place where famed blues guitarist "Robert Johnson" allegedly sold his soul to the devil...it was where HWY 61 and HWY 49 cross in Clarksdale Mississippi. Here is a little about Robert Johnson

Band Rehearsal

Rehearsal time again, here is Rachel posing with our gear during a rehearsal break at our summer retreat. - SEE PHOTOS -

I LOVE SUSHI

Anyone that knows me (Sixx), knows I LOVE SUSHI! I would go so far as to give up all others foods if only I had an endless supply of sushi. Last night I had a wonderful SURPRISE!

Paradise Cove Tiki Bar & Grill where we played have ahi tuna sushi rolls that are out of this world. They were amazing, the fish was delicious and the flavors were addictive. Rachel and I had one each, and one more each for the ride home....and a side order of french fries - maybe not the greatest combo platter, but damn they were good...the fries were battered and season to perfection. In any case, Rachel and I are very excited about Wild Pack Wednesdays at Paradise Cove, because for us it's going to be Sushi (and french fries) Day Wednesday!

Giggin' at Mama Bears

Rachel and I getting ready for our weekly gig at Mama Bears. This is the coolest place; the staff are awesome, the food is the best, and the customers are the coolest. We have our groupies that come each week to see us.

Plus, we talked them into two pizzas as part of our pay...1 pizza when we get there and 1 pizza to take home when we're done.

Oh yah baby! - SEE Photos!

Rachel Alexander Lawrence-Pack

Rachel Alexander Lawrence-Pack

While Sixx had loved music and made many course changes, Rachel was rather different. She loved fitness, leading her to the position of Vice President of the California State Fresno Kinesiology Club. There, she worked to produce the KPC Fitness Expo for 3 years.  For the remainder of her time before Sixx, she stayed firmly in fitness and worked in many positions including head lifeguard, fitness trainer, aerobics instructor, marketing director, event promoter, technical advisor and talent manager.

Rachel is an expert at working with people and managing fundraising events, something she learned from her nearly 11 years working for the YMCA. During her time at the YMCA, she was responsible for curriculum, volunteers coordination and fitness coordinator managing a staff of 12. After graduating from Fresno State, Rachel pursued her passion as a national fitness competitor in NPC and WFA, competing and placing in Las Vegas, Florida, Alabama and other events around the country; placing in the top 3 many times.
